Rachael E. Wilcox
Artist Statement

This series deals with the duality of social pressure and internal conflict which occur in my psyche as I navigate through life.

Using both poetry and mirrors I actively incorporate the viewer in each sculpture.  Through their own reflection the viewer is transported into the confused and distorted world of the unconscious.  This troubled yet beautiful world pairs inner strength with shame, violence inflicted by others with that which is self inflicted, rejection and victimization with innate power and fortitude.

I universalize what is mine through the Greek myth of Persephone.  With her character representing the exchange between internal and external conflicts I hope my sculpture will connect with others who’ve faced similar experiences, or give those who have not a different perspective.
